Feb 28, 2026 By Sean William

Denver, Colorado, which began as a mining town in the 1850s, is now the largest and most important metropolis in the Rocky Mountain area. Moreover, the rest of the United States has realized that Denver is different from a typical cow town in recent years. Many young professionals have relocated to Denver from coastal cities to pursue a less hectic pace, better weather, proximity to the mountains, lower housing costs, and more entertainment opportunities. Even if you believe you know what surprises await you in Denver, you should be ready for the unexpected.

Societal Traditions

During the 1700s and 1800s, Denver was also home to a sizable African American population (Five Points). Denver's cuisine and festivals, such as Cinco de Mayo (which lasts for two days), the city's excellent jazz festival, and PrideFest, represent the city's cultural diversity.

The Food

It used to be that most restaurants only served steak and Mexican food. Now, though, you can find cuisines from all over the world in Denver, from the Japanese to the Mediterranean. Local delicacies unique to the Mile High City include Denver's famed green chilli, for instance, is a must-try during your stay. It's often made with tomato, onions, pork, and, of course, green chiles. Depending on who's making the stew, it can range from mildly spicy to tongue-numbing.
