Form 1040 V: Payment Voucher

Feb 13, 2026 By Rick Novak

Form 1040-V, also known as the Payment Voucher, is a declaration that taxpayers must provide to the IRS in conjunction with their tax return if they intend to pay their taxes using a check or money order. Depending on the taxpayer's residence, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) provides a variety of filing centers to which they may mail their payments and their 1040-V forms. Those who are required to file taxes but do not choose to do so can online submit their payments, which eliminates the requirement to complete Form 1040-V.

Who Is Allowed to File Form 1040-V, Payment Voucher?

If you want to send a check or money order to the IRS, you must complete Form 1040-V. If you have an outstanding balance that appears on the "Amount You Owe" line of your Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040NR, you may send your payment to the IRS or state tax office directly. In addition, taxpayers may avoid printing, filling out, and mailing Form 1040-V by making payments online.

Instructions for Completing the Payment Voucher, Form 1040-V

Your tax return and payment should be submitted with the payment voucher at the bottom of Form 1040-V. Four essential pieces of information are requested on the voucher.

The Internal Revenue Service does not accept payments in cash via mail. To pay the amount of your yearly tax obligation, you must either submit a check or a money order. The "United States Treasury" should be written on them. Be sure that your name and address are written on the check or money order, so there are no issues while processing your payment. A daytime phone number and your Social Security number should also be included in the payment. Write the Social Security number shown first on your Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR if you submit a combined return.

On the right-hand side of the check, the Internal Revenue Service advises putting the amount paid in the following format: $XXX.XX. You are not recommended to write using dashes ($XXX—) or lines ($XXX xx/100). The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website offers a downloadable version of Form 1040-V.

Special Considerations

By paying via the safe and secure IRS website, you may skip filling out Form 1040-V and assure that it will be processed more promptly. You have three options for making an electronic payment to the IRS:

With IRS Direct Pay, you may settle your tax debt by having the necessary funds withdrawn from your checking or savings account. If you want to avoid the money being taken out immediately, you may use this option to plan payment for up to 30 days.

The Internal Revenue Service also accepts debit cards and credit cards for payment. It employs third-party organizations to handle the payments, and those companies charge a fixed cost for debit card transactions and a fee based on a percentage for credit card transactions.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System is a payment mechanism providing higher security (EFTPS). It makes use of a secure browser and three forms of identification: your taxpayer identification number (TIN) (for people, this is often your Social Security number), a personal identification number (PIN), and an Internet password. You need to sign up for EFTPS, a procedure that may take up to five business days to complete.

What Is the Purpose of Form 1040-V?

Taxpayers with an outstanding amount for their yearly tax bills must fill out a statement known as Form 1040-V and submit it to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The taxpayer's name, TIN, address, and the owing amount must all be included on the form. While filing jointly, the taxpayer must include submitting their spouse's Social Security number.

How Do I Pay My Tax Bill Using Form 1040-V Online?

If you make your payment online, Form 1040-V cannot be used. You are only permitted to use the form if you send payment via mail as a check or money order.

Bottom Line

Taxpayers who want to make payments to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) through check or money order must utilize Form 1040-V. Because taxpayers may now make payments online, the need to file Form 1040-V has lessened. If you decide to utilize Form 1040-V, you need to ensure that it is completed accurately to prevent any problems with your tax returns.
