The Atacama Desert has the clearest skies on the planet. The combination of extreme dryness, high altitude (San Pedro sits at 2,400 meters), and minimal light pollution creates conditions that attract professional astronomers from around the world. For casual visitors, stargazing tours depart from San Pedro every clear night, and they are extraordinary.
Book at least two days in advance — tours are limited to small groups and sell out. The best conditions are during the new moon phase. Bring warm layers — desert temperatures drop dramatically after sunset, and it can be near freezing at 10 PM even when the daytime high was 30°C. Most tours provide hot drinks and blankets, but a fleece jacket, beanie, and gloves are essential.

Salar de Tara is the single most breathtaking landscape I've ever seen. Located about 120 kilometers northeast of San Pedro at an elevation of 4,300 meters, the salt flat is surrounded by the Monjes de la Pacana — towering volcanic rock formations that look like hooded monks standing in a line across the horizon. The flat itself is a vast expanse of white salt crust, dotted with shallow lagoons in shades of turquoise and emerald, with flamingos wading in the shallows and vicuñas grazing at the edges.
Book with a reputable operator — the road to Salar de Tara is remote, and vehicle breakdowns are not uncommon. I went with Pangea Expeditions and was satisfied with their equipment and guide.
Valle de la Muerte (Death Valley) is a 15-minute drive from San Pedro, and it's the most accessible adventure activity in the Atacama. The valley is a narrow gorge between massive sand dunes, with rock formations sculpted by wind into surreal shapes. Sandboarding here involves strapping a snowboard to your feet and riding down the dune faces — it's exactly like snowboarding but on sand, which is warmer, slower, and much harder to fall on without getting a mouthful of grit.
I booked a sunset sandboarding tour through my hostel for 20,000 CLP ($20), which included board rental, a 30-minute lesson, and transport. My first three attempts ended in spectacular face-plants, but by the fourth run I was making it to the bottom without falling. The sand is fine and soft, so falls don't hurt, but it gets everywhere. You can also rent boards in town (8,000 to 12,000 CLP per day) and go independently — the dunes are accessible by bike or on foot from San Pedro.
Go in the late afternoon when the sand has cooled (midday sand temperatures can exceed 60°C) and stay for sunset. The light on the dunes at golden hour is stunning, and the valley is quiet and empty in the evenings. Bring at least 1 liter of water, sunglasses, and a bandana to cover your mouth on windy days.

The Atacama offers world-class hiking, but the altitude is a serious factor that many travelers underestimate. San Pedro sits at 2,400 meters, and most hiking destinations are between 3,500 and 5,000 meters. Even fit hikers will feel the effects — reduced oxygen means faster heart rate, quicker fatigue, and potential altitude sickness above 3,500 meters.
The best day hike is the Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) circuit, starting from the entrance gate 13 kilometers west of San Pedro. The 5-kilometer trail winds through sand dunes, salt caves, and dry riverbeds, with views of the Cordillera de la Sal that glow orange and purple at sunset. Entrance costs 3,000 CLP ($3), and the trail takes 2 to 3 hours. It's not technically difficult, but the heat and altitude make it more demanding than the distance suggests.
For a more challenging hike, the Tatio Geysers at 4,300 meters offer a 3-hour circuit through a geothermal field with fumaroles, boiling mud pots, and hot springs. Most people visit Tatio on a dawn tour (leaving San Pedro at 4:30 AM to catch the geysers at their most active at sunrise). Tour prices range from 25,000 to 40,000 CLP ($25 to $40), including breakfast. The hot springs at the site are warm enough to swim in, and soaking in a natural pool at 4,300 meters while watching steam rise from the ground around you is a singular experience.
How many days do you need in the Atacama? Four to five days lets you do the main tours. Add two more days if you want multi-day treks or to visit the ALMA observatory.
How much does an Atacama trip cost? Budget travelers can manage $50 to $70 per day. Mid-range travelers should budget $100 to $150 per day.
Do you need a guide? For most standard tours, yes — the distances are vast and roads are unpaved. Independent hiking is possible at Moon Valley and Death Valley.
The Atacama Desert is not a place of abundance — it's a place of extremes. Extreme dryness, extreme altitude, extreme beauty. Standing on the edge of Salar de Tara at 4,300 meters, looking at a landscape that could pass for Mars, I understood why astronomers and geologists are drawn here. The desert strips everything down to essentials: water, warmth, shelter, and the overwhelming awareness of how small you are in the scale of things. Go for the stargazing, stay for the landscapes, and leave with a new understanding of what silence and emptiness can do to a person who's spent too long in cities.
